“ARCADY and PICADY? They might be useful…”
If someone ever asks where the idea for Transport Planning Principles came into being it’s probably from this sentence above.
Taking the readers back to November 2011 as an Postgraduate Student, my cohort was four days into a weeks worth of Transport Modelling lectures. As you can image, it was 9-5 daily and the vast majority of this time was concerned with the theory of Transport Modelling. To most of us with a humanities background the output on Lecturers powerpoints was largely impenetrable. Made worse by one of our friends stating quite confidently on a Wednesday afternoon that the formula on the board was wrong. Naturally this sent the Geography BA’s amongst us into a bit of a tailspin.
As for the title of this blog, this was stated by a guest lecturer in the computer suite on a Thursday morning and towards the end of the week.
The point being was this, at the height of what was, the single worst jobs market in our lifetime, we were being taught things of very little practical benefit and it was up to our prospective employers, whenever we managed to get one to train us, as opposed to teach us. As you can imagine that went down rather poorly amongst us, many of whom were unemplyed at the time.
It was cushioned slightly by the fact an MSc was at the time £3,500 for the year. Many of whom got this education for free from grants and other bursaries. Whilst it was unpalatable to hear that, financially it was an acceptable tradeoff- given we were only 21/22 at the time.
15 years worth of work later and with the price of a comparable, if not identically taught, Masters degree now costing well over £14,000 this financial/educational tradeoff is less easy to make. I certainly would have second thoughts, especially as the bursary and grant landscape is radically different too.
Through this course we aim to give you your financial independence back by offering a low cost alternative to an Masters course, or equivalent. In six hours will will show you enough to succeed at an early stage with any potential employers by they Private or Public, either in the UK or elsewhere.
Crucially we will teach and show you practical skills succinctly and with a wealth of supporting information to ensure you can operate quickly and confidently within a workplace.
